2018 Yeti SB5+ Carbon SRAM GX Eagle
The SB5+ is its own beast. Built on a 27.5 plus platform, it can accomodate up to 3.0 tires. This isn’t the SB5 with plus tires on it – it’s a plus-sized dedicated bike that takes on loose gravel and varied trail conditions with ease.
Combining SRAM GX Eagle with Yeti’s SB5+ Carbon frame gave this bike even more climbing prowess. Turn it downhill and the traction and stability, coupled with Yeti’s Switch Infinity technology and Fox’s Performance fork and shock, equates an overall plush feel. New this year the Fox Transfer seat post. Maxxis Rekon 2.8 tires round out this traction focused build.
There are no flip-chips here to change the bike’s geometry, no multiple wheel sizes, nothing to alter Yeti’s suspension kinematics. Yeti discovered that slight changes in tire diameter had a dramatic impact on critical frame properties such as bottom bracket height and mechanical trail. Not wating to sacrifice any defining ride characteristics by adopting the wheels to fit an existing platform, the SB5+ was born into its own identity in the Yeti line.
By making small changes in the carbon fiber layup of their TURQ Series bikes, Yeti was able to make a more aggressively priced carbon high-performance mountain bike while maintaining strength and stiffness of its higher end sibling. The carbon fiber weighs a bit more, about 250 g for a frame. You’ll see that every bike model is now offered in carbon with high-end components.
