Who We Are
The BackCountry is an independent ski, bike, and mountain shop located in Truckee, California. In business since 1993, our goal is to provide the best gear, service, and advice in the Tahoe/Truckee area. We know the gear and will steer you straight!
Whether you’re skiing or snowboarding the Sierra backcountry, on or off-road cycling, rock climbing, backpacking, paddling, hiking, snowshoeing, trail running, or just plain kicking around the Sierra, we’ve got you covered with all of the equipment you need. Plus you can hit us up for directions to incredible rides, trails, climbing areas, and ski descents both near and far. We have been in business since 1993 and most of our staff have worked their entire lives in the Bike & Ski industry. We know and use this gear.
Bike – We have a great selection of bikes for sale to match any skill level of rider and budget. We carry Norco, Yeti, Kona, Pivot, Scott, Mondraker, Transition and Redline BMX. Our pro bicycle mechanics will help you form the best plan to rebuild your old bike or build your new dream bike. Our staff rides A LOT and we know the trails. We love helping people get to the next level in their riding. That might mean some coaching on riding technique in the parking lot, or lessons for trail side bike repair. We like to help you improve your bike for free in the parking lot where possible. Our customers might stop by because of our convenient location, proximity to great trails and bike paths, or top bike brands….but the return for the high quality of customer service and mentorship.
Ski, Splitboard & Snowboard – Our winter passion is backcountry Skiing (Alpine Touring and Telemark) and Splitboarding. We have an excellent selection ski and snowboard boots, and we know how to get them fit properly for these activities. Get your feet fit by someone who tours for turns like you do. Or by someone who also skis hard at the resort! Most of us do both and we understand the need for equipment that works well in both places. We cover everything from heavy duty downhill to performance backcountry touring to super light ski touring. We won’t let you leave our shop without a good fit and equipment that makes sense. After 25 years, we know this industry. We experiment with every brand, but we won’t experiment with you. The equipment we promote is the proven, no-brainer choices that we use ourselves. We won’t sell you gear you don’t need, just the same basic kit we have in our car too.
Climb – Truckee has some of the best granite rock climbing in the world just a mile or two from the store. Some of us climb regularly for a lunch break! On your way to Tuolumne Meadows? Stop in for advice on routes or to grab the gear you have lost or worn to shreds. Make a Tahoe Climbing Trip out of it and hit 5 star climbing meccas like Lover’s Leap, Woodfords, Phantom Spires, Sugarloaf, Shirley Canyon, Big Chief, Coldstream Canyon, and more. It’s endless. Fred Becky would say “there is more good granite rock in California than the rest of the world combined”. Weather you sport or trad climb we got the gear that will not only protect you but help you get up those crags with confidence. Donner Summit is 2 miles up the road, offering easy access, friendly locals, and a thousands worthy climbs. We sell Black Diamond, Mammut, Sterling, La Sportiva, Camp, Petzl and Metolius.
Backpacking & Camping Gear – We are passionate about outdoor adventures, sometimes that means packing it all in one pack and venturing into the wilderness with nothing but the gear on your back. Let us help you find the most efficient backpack and camping gear that makes the experience one to remember. Weather you are hiking the entirety of the Pacific Crest Trail or simply doing an overnight camping trip, it is essential to pack only what you need. We have the proper gear for all of these kinds of backpacking trips. Water purifiers, freeze-dried food, sleeping bags and mats are all part of the equation. Our advice comes from real experience constantly going out on both car camping and backpacking trips to ride mountain bikes, rock climb, and backcountry ski and snowboard. We don’t sell the silly stuff, just the essential and proven gear you can afford and count on.
