2018 Yeti SB5.5 Carbon Shimano XT/SLX
Forget any preconceived notions about 29ers. Thanks to an impeccable frame design, shortened chain stays and aggressive suspension spec, the SB5.5 is easy to maneuver and feels lively and quick on the descents.
Spec’d from front to back to be an enduro race machine, the SB5.5 Carbon XT/SLX is equipped with a Shimano drivetrain and brakes. Fox Performance suspension and Transfer seat post, Race Face crankarms and bar/stem combo, and aggressive Maxxis tire spec round out this build. This bike is armed and ready for park days and backcountry exploits, and is priced to impress.
The SB5.5’s 17.2 inch chainstays aren’t super-short by today’s standards, but that’s exactly the point. Yeti’s testers wanted some torsional flex so the bike handled off-camber descents better. They were able to achieve this by right sizing the chainstays and optimizing the carbon layup to allow rear wheel to track on gnarly terrain. To balance the bike’s front end, Yeti chose to use a long travel 51mm offset fork combined with a 66.5 degree head angle. This allows us to precisely tune the bike’s mechanical trail and wheelbase.
By making small changes in the carbon fiber layup of our TURQ Series bikes, we are able to make a more aggressively priced carbon high-performance mountain bike while maintaining strength and stiffness of its higher end sibling. The carbon fiber weighs a bit more, about 250 g for a frame. You’ll see that every bike model is now offered in carbon with high-end components.
